How to pack kitchen items and glassware safely

Which materials to use and how to pack plates, glasses and steel vessels so they arrive in one piece.

Get the right materials

You need strong cartons, packing paper, bubble wrap, packing tape and a marker. Smaller cartons are better for heavy items like plates, so they stay easy to lift.

Plates and bowls

Wrap each plate in paper and stand it on its edge, like files in a drawer, rather than stacking flat. Fill gaps with crumpled paper so nothing moves when you shake the carton gently.

Glasses and cups

Stuff each glass with paper, then wrap the outside in bubble wrap. Place them upright, never on their side, and add a layer of padding on top before closing the box.

Steel vessels and appliances

Steel and aluminium vessels can nest inside one another with paper between them. Pack mixers, grinders and other small appliances in their original boxes if you still have them.

Label clearly

Mark each carton with "Kitchen", the main contents and "Fragile" where needed. Write on the side as well as the top, so it is visible when cartons are stacked.
